A Global Experience
One of my favorite Tuesday Times Roundtables was "One Family's Choice Against Genocide: Learning Harmony from Rwanda", which was presented by Carl Wilkens.
As a humanitarian aid worker, Carl Wilkens moved his young family to Rwanda in the spring of 1990. When the genocide was launched in April 1994, Carl refused to leave, even when urged to do so by close friends, his church and the United States government. Thousands of expatriates evacuated and the United Nations pulled out most of its troops. Carl was the only American to remain in the country. Venturing out each day into streets crackling with mortars and gunfire, he worked his way through roadblocks of angry, bloodstained soldiers and civilians armed with machetes and assault rifles in order to bring food, water and medicine to groups of orphans trapped around the city. His actions saved the lives of hundreds.
Below are just a few of my global learning coursework
Global Learning Involvements
GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.
During my time as an active i attended weekly meetings, fundraising events and community outreach volunteer work. One of my most memorable experience as a member was volunteering at the Lotus House around the holiday's.
Oxfam is a global organization working to end the injustice of poverty. We help people build better futures for themselves, hold the powerful accountable, and save lives in disasters. Our mission is to tackle the root causes of poverty and create lasting solutions.
As a founding member of Oxfam FIU I was responsible for creating recruitment events. During fall 2017, we would host a hunger awareness at Vicky's bakery once a month. The highlight of my membership was successfully putting on an annual hunger banquet. Witnessing all of our planning and hard work come into fruition was heartwarming.
